Grade 1

  • Basic monotone in simple quadruple time
  • Introduction to flourishing: angled spin, split the feather 

Grade 2

  • Single strokes, double strokes, paradiddles
  • Development of note values
  • Rests
  • Rolls
  • Incomplete bars, anacrusis
  • Continued development of monotones in simple duple, simple triple and simple quadruple time signatures
  • Continued development of exercises and set pieces
  • Aural test: distinguish between simple duple, simple triple and simple quadruple time
  • Sight reading test
  • Development of flourishing: angled spin, split the feather

Grade 3

  • Counting in simple and compound time: duple, triple, quadruple
  • Accents
  • Accented double strokes, accented paradiddles
  • Lengthening of notes, dot and cut
  • Continued development of monotones
  • Continued development of exercises and set pieces
  • Aural test: distinguish between compound duple, compound triple and compound quadruple time signatures
  • Sight reading test
  • Development of flourishing: single stick stop/stall, double stick stop/stall, flat spins, figure 8 flourish, reverse figure 8 flourish

 

Grade 4

  • Continued development of counting in simple and compound time
  • Irregular groups
  • Continued development of lengthened notes (dot and cut) and accents
  • Continued development of monotones
  • Continued development of exercises and set pieces
  • Aural test in simple and compound time
  • Sight reading test in simple and compound time
  • Development of flourishing: cartwheel, reverse cartwheel, crossover, cuts, traffic policeman/splits

 

Grade 5

To complete this grade the student is expected to be competent in grades 1 and 2 of the snare drum programme and more advanced monotones
